Privacy notice

What this site collects, and how to say no.

Effective August 28, 2026. This notice covers jeanmcdowell.com. There are no accounts, no forms, and no newsletter here. The site collects only anonymous usage analytics: a cookieless page counter that is always on, and Google Analytics only if you allow it.

Your choice

When you first arrive, a notice at the bottom of the page asks whether Google Analytics may run. Nothing from Google is requested until you accept. Declining leaves no cookie behind; your answer is kept in your browser's local storage so the notice does not return. You can change your answer at any time here or from Analytics settings in the footer of every page.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, the site treats it as a decline and does not show the notice. You can still opt in from the footer.

This choice governs Google Analytics. The cookieless page counter described below runs regardless, because it sets no cookies and stores no personal data.

What is always counted

Simple Analytics, a privacy-first page counter, runs on every page through the site's host, Netlify. It uses no cookies, keeps no identifiers, and does not follow you to other sites; it records aggregate page views, referrers, and browser and device type, none of which can be tied to you. Its handling of this data is described in Simple Analytics' privacy policy.

What is collected, if you accept

With your permission, Google Analytics 4 records how the site is used so I can see which pages are read and which links matter:

  • Pages viewed, time on page, and how far you scroll.
  • The site that referred you, your browser and device type, screen size, and language.
  • Approximate location at city level, derived by Google from your IP address; Google does not store the address itself.
  • Interactions: outbound links, the resume download, contact and LinkedIn clicks, the Pegasus Bluff link, and which posters are opened on the Films page.

The site does not collect names, email addresses, or anything you type. Google Signals (demographic and interest reporting tied to Google accounts) is switched off, and no advertising features are enabled.

Cookies

These are set by Google Analytics only after you accept, on the jeanmcdowell.com domain, and are removed if you later decline:

CookiePurposeLasts
_gaDistinguishes returning visitors with a random identifier.2 years
_ga_7JR971YNZMKeeps the current visit together as one session.2 years

The site sets no other cookies; Simple Analytics uses none at all. Your analytics choice is stored in local storage under jm_consent_v1.

Who processes the data

Analytics data is processed by Google LLC on my behalf and held in Google Analytics for 14 months before it is deleted automatically. Google describes its handling of this data in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and its Privacy Policy. Google also offers a browser add-on that blocks Google Analytics everywhere. The site is hosted by Netlify, whose servers keep standard access logs for security and reliability; those are governed by Netlify's privacy policy.

Aggregate page counts are processed by Simple Analytics, a Dutch company that stores no personal data. I do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Your rights

If you are a California resident, you may ask what personal information has been collected about you, ask for it to be deleted, and opt out of any sale or sharing (none occurs). You will not be treated differently for exercising these rights. Visitors in the European Union, the United Kingdom, and other jurisdictions with data protection laws have equivalent rights of access, correction, deletion, and objection. To make a request, email jean@jeanmcdowell.com; I will respond within 30 days. Because analytics data is anonymous, I may be unable to link a request to a specific record.

Changes

If this notice changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date. If a change materially expands what is collected, the consent notice will be shown again before anything new runs.
